Show 3377 Nims- D 1402 BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Did you have any difficulty bringing your boat through Glen Canyon? A Yes. Q Tell me about that, please. A Our first rapid was at Tickaboo creek, and it was a big one; some of the boats got damaged, -- two of them, I believe, got damaged; we had to pull in shore and repair; then when we got down to Trachyte creek or river or whatever it was, we had more trouble because of a bigger rapid, and all the boats sprung leaks. We stopped there nearly two days, repairing boats. Q From Trachyte down to Lees Ferry did you have any troubles? A Yes, we had trouble nearly all the way, of one kind or another, either striking rocks in the rapid that you came across and springing leaks, or we couldn't find a defined channel, and would scrap on sandbars. Q Did this scraping on sandbars do any damage to your boats? A Well, some of them it helped to spring leaks anew, because we didn't have any pitch or anything to calk them with. Q Did you encounter any sand waves in that canyon? A Down towards the lower end we did, sand waves and high wind, which made great, high waves, almost played our backs out to make it, to row it. Q Have any other difficulty in going in to Lees Ferry? |
