Show 3374 Nims- D 1399 Q Will you tell me, please, how this expedition got through the cataracts? A There wasn't much left of it when we got through, from losing the boats, and provisions. Q Just start in at the head of the cataracts, and tell me of your progress down the cataracts. A Six miles below the head of the river of the junction there-- it was the head, at that time -- was our first rapid. Some of the boats ran the rapid, and some of them we had to portage; the cooks had difficulty with their boat and the raft; and in the second rapid, shortly below that, the raft got away from the cooks and went down stream. Further down the river there it broke up, and from time to time we would find one of these flats, as we called it, -- one of those cans, and we would get it. We got three of the floats that were not damaged; the other two had got broken on the rocks, and when we would come to open them the water had gotten in, and we had to throw the stuff away. Q When you arrive at the end of Cataract canyon, how many boats did you have left? A We had three. Q Did you lose all of the other in Cataract Canyon? A We lost two in Cataract canyon, and one we broke up to get |
