Show 3326 Aurand- D 1351 A Had a boat owned by the Moab Garage Company, about sixteen feet long, five feet wide; it would draw from twelve to fourteen inches of water, depending on the load; this was motored by a Ford engine, and the propeller was properly enclosed with a grill to keep us from injury on sandbars, and on ice and stumps. Q Who accompanied you on that trip? A Mr. Smith, who was formerly a resident of Grand Junction, A. Smith, I believe the initials are. Q Was he an experienced boat man? A He had been in the employ of the Moab Garage for some time previous; how long, I don't know. Q How far down the river did you go on that trip? A Into the head of Cataract canyon, slightly over five miles below the confluence of the two rivers. Q Just tell me briefly about your trip down the river, and what trouble you had, if any. A Starting out of Moab, Utah, we were fairly heavily loaded; we had sixty- five gallons of gas and five gallons of oil with us; we commenced to encounter trouble after leaving mile post 39, which is the second camp of the Midwest Refining Company. Prior to that time we had trailed the boat in part, and it had been drifting part of the way. Q What do you mean, trailed the boat? |
