A For a man unfamiliar with the river -- THE SPECIAL MASTER: Just a minutes. I didn't understand the Colonel navigated the boats. I understood Baldwin navigated them. MR. BLACKMAR: Colonel Dent was along with him, and had the map out all of the time. THE SPECIAL MASTER: Wouldn't you better ask him how much, if at all, he personally used the map? BY MR. A For a good part of the time I had the map in front of me, and watched for the bends, changes in curvature, and by watching the contours, watched for places where excess slope indicated in general that rapids might be anticipated. While I was not navigating the boat, or responsible for it, I did discuss appearance of the water surface with the navigator, and we exchanged opinions as to where the best water was likely to be found on many occasions.
