Show 3245 Dent- D 1270 these maps is in giving a certain amount of warning as to what may be in store for you a short distance down stream. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q These maps are of a survey seventeen years ago. Suppose you had a survey the previous year? A To be of value to the navigator, a survey would necessarily be of an entirely different type. There is nothing in these maps to show where the channel is, other than what may be anticipated as a result of noting the curvature of the stream.. Q Supposing you had a chart like the Coast Survey chart, showing where the channel was in the previous September, wouldn't that have been of some assistance? A No, your Honor. Q None? A Practically none. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Why is that, Colonel? A Because each freshet establishes bars in substantially the same general location, but the form of the bar established by one freshet is very different from that from another. Also, as the river falls, reaches a cut- out stage, it cuts out in one manner one year, and a different manner the next, -- or after each freshet, I should say. MR. BLACKMAR: I think that is all, Colonel. |
