BLACKMAR: Q There has been something said from time to time about crossing bars. I would like to get that straight, as to just what a crossing bar it. Can you straighten us out on that? A A river is ordinarily a succession of bends, with more or less straight reaches at the point where the curvature changes. During a freshet a river ordinarily builds a bar at the point where this curvature changes. This bar -- Q Can you indicate there just where that change would come? Suppose you out a letter " A" there. A I was trying to discuss this without reference to the diagram. THE SPECIAL MASTER: I would that is better, because we can not introduce the blackboard in evidence. MR. BLACKMAR: All right, then. Q In the reach where the change of curvature occurs, there will ordinarily be built up during a freshet a bar of sand. I am speaking now exclusively of rivers carrying/ heavy load of sand in their bed. Gravel is a very different proposition, |
