Show Idea of Solidity. Book II. ~1ard, can keep his Hands from appma<;hing one another, may be plcafed to make an Experiment, with the Air mclofed m a Football. . 9.5.By this Idea of Solidity, is the Extenfion of Body dttbngmil1ed from the Extenfion of Space. The Extenfion of Body, bemg notlung but the cohefion or continuity of folid, feparablc, .moveable Parts; and the Ex. tenfion of Sp-ace, the continuity of unfoh0, mfeparablc, and tmmoveable Parts. Vpontl>e Solidity of Bodies alfo, t!epenJs tiJCir mut•altmpu/fe, Re· jijlance, and Protrujion. Of pure Space then, and Solidity, there arc feveral (amoAg!l: which, I coofefs my felf one) who perfua~e themfelvcs, they have clear. and. di!l:in<'l Ideas; and that they can tluok on Space,, without any thmg m 1t, that refills, or IS protruded by Body ; whereof they think they have as dear an Idea, as of the Extenfion of Body, the Idea of the di!lance between the oppofite Parts of a concave Superficies, being equally as clear without, as with the Idea of any folid Parts be· tween· and on the other fide, That they have the Idea of fomething that fills fp~ce, that can be protruded 9y the impulfe of other Bodies, or rcr.fl their Motion. If there be others, that have not thefe two Ideas dJfl:mtl:, but confound them, and make but one of them, I know not, how Men, who have the fame Idea, under different Names, or different !deas, under the fame Name, can, in that cafe, talk with one another, any more than a Man who not being blind, or deaf, has difl:inct Ideas of the Colqur of Searle;, and the found of a Trumpet, could difcourfe concerning Scarlet· Colour with the blind Man, I mention in another Place, who phanfted, that the Idea of Scarlet was like the found of a Trnmpet. 9. 6. If any one ask me, What this Solidity is, I fend him to his Senfes to inform hinl: Let him put a Flint, or a Foot-ball between his Hands; and then endeavour to join them,, and he will know. If he thinks this nota fufficient Explication of Solidity, what it is, and wherein it confiils; I promife to tell him, what it is, and wherein it confifl:s, when he tells me, what thinking is, or wherein it confifis ; or explain to me, what Extenfion or Motion is, which, perhaps feems much eafier. The fimple Ideas we have fuch, as experience teaches them us ; but if beyond tlut, we endeavour by Words to make them clearer in the Mind, we lhall fuc· ceed no better , than if we went about to clear up the Darknefs of a blind Man's mind , by talking; and to difcourfe into him the Ideas of Light and Colours. The Reafon of this , I lhall lhew in another Place. · CHAP· Chap. V. Vl Simple Ideas ofRejleflion. Q HAP. V. Of {tmple Ideas of dil•ers Sen{es. \ THe ldetiJ we get by m~re than one Senf~, are of Space, or Exttn• jion, ,Ftgure, Refl, and Mot1o11: For thefe make perceivable ini' preJ!iohs, both on the Eyes and Touch; arid we can receive and convey mto our Mmds , the IJeas of the Extenfion , Figure, Motion and Refi ofBodies, both by feeing ahd feeling; But having occafion to fPeak more at large of thefe, m another place, I here only enumerate them. CHAP. VI. Of {lmple Ideas of ~jleflio1l, §. r. T. He Mind rece.iving the ide~,mentio!led i.n the foregoing Cha· pter, fr_om Without, when It turns 1ts VIew inward upon its felf, and obferves Its ?Wn Acttons about thofe Ideas it has, takes from thence other /de a;, which are as capable to be the Objects of its C.mtem· plation, as of any of thofe it received from foreign things. 9· ~. The two great and prinCipal Actions ofthe Mind, which are moll frequently confidered , and which are fo frequent , that every one thai pleafes, may take notice of in himfelf, are thefe two: Perception, or Thinking ; arid Polition, dr Willing,. The power in the Mind of producing thefe Actions we denominate Faculties, and are called the Vnderjlandi~g, and the Wilt. Of fome of the modes of thefe fimple Ideas of Refled:10n, fuch as are Remembrance, Difcernmg, Rtafonmg, Judgmg, Knowledge, Fa1th, &c. I lhallliave occafiori to fpeak hereafter. Hi }I |
