Show 322 The interesting thing about problems like this, was that they sometimes brought out the best side of people, giving them a chance to touch the lives of another person. I remember the different reactions that people would have towards my mom. Some ofthe reactions were those of fear. You could feel people feeling bad for us. Some - many - people just didn't know how to react at all. But one person, on this night, knew just what to do. The nurse that I remember was a male nurse, maybe about thirty years old. Having somehow found out that it was my birthday, he offered to take me over to the gas station for a drink. I agreed, and we ran out into the night and got into his truck. We drove the few blocks from my house to the gas station. Though it was a small station, it was the central hub of our small town (there weren't many other places to go in a town without a single traffic light). We arrived at the gas station, purchased the drink, and left. But on the way back, he let me drive. The kind acts of complete strangers can completely change the atmosphere of your life. As difficult as that birthday could have been, it turned out to be a somewhat pleasant evening, with a peaceful drive in a complete stranger's tmck. |
