Show 177 "Do you think that's too much?" she is asking. She is asking me for my opinion and for a minute I do not respond. She will probably take it as due consideration of the question asked. I will not correct her presumption with any badly-stated solicitous compliments. "I think I would rather be too tight," I am responding. "OK, then. Do you want to go home or stay the night so we can watch this?" There is only one answer: I am going home. Barbara has remained at the hospital all these hours and I am grateful. But it is she who is silent now as we drive back home to our small town in the mountains. "That was scary," she is saying, venturing at last into our mutual unstated fears. "Yeah," I reply, joining her in sudden memory of that red and black world. "That was scary." |
