Show 239 I have not been well enough, long enough to do much more than help just those few. Now, however... Everyone has finished writing their goals and I too am putting down my dull pencil. We are reading our goals to each other and as each has finished, the others offer encouragement and suggestions for accomplishing them. My son's eyes rum to me and I am looking at my humble and awkward script. "Write five sample columns about disability issues and take them to the newspaper editor," I say and everyone is unexpectedly silent. It is not as though I have never written, I am thinking in defense, remembering my year as a copy girl at a large city newspaper and a short stint as assistant editor of an English newspaper in Greece. I have also been learning quite a bit lately about disability law and policy-making in general. It has been a matter of self-defense. Then suddenly everyone is talking at once and I am relieved to know that their silence was not bom of incredulousness. "Yeah!" one is saying. "You go, Mom!" another is shouting. |
