Show 106 Orange Duck Feet and Red Converse High-Tops My intern, just coming off shift, has folded her stethoscope into the deep front pocket of her white coat and then taken it off, fitting it over the shoulders of the hard plastic visitor's chair. She is trying to settle into that chair as comfortably as possible and Lisa is here as well, passing out plastic bowls, though I understand she will probably have to leave throughout, since she is on duty now. My intern and her husband, whose patient I was the week before, are from North Carolina. Her friend, also from North Carolina, is coming through the door now and I am told that she is on schedule to be my intern next week and her husband, the week after that, if I am here that long. Mai, one of my favorite nurses' aides, will join us in a few minutes. We are going to watch "Fried Green Tomatoes" together. It has just come out on video and Lisa has rented it for our party. She has brought in bags of micro-waved movie-theater style buttered-saturated popcorn along with the TV and VCR on the rattletrap stand, wheels bumping askew like a grocery cart. She has "borrowed" these electronics from the staff conference room down the hall for the occasion. There really is no occasion. I have been here for weeks now and perhaps the staff is feeling sorry for my evenings alone with the TV and the tan walls. It was Lisa's idea - she had come rushing through my door that afternoon and asked if I had seen this movie yet. Of course, at best, I am |
