Show Gillespie RESERVE OFFICERS TRAINING CORPS MAJOR AND OFFICERS The R. 0. T. C. is a field artillery unit of the Reserve Officers Training Corps. These units are maintained by the government at the larger colleges and universities of the country. There are three R. 0. T. C. units in the Ninth Corps Area; University of Utah, Leland Stanford University, and Oregon State College. The University has always been one of the highest units of the area and of the nation. Enrollment in the R. 0. T. C. is elective. Since the course is required for one year at least in most schools which have units, Utah is proud of its high rating. The objective of R. 0. T. C. work is to qualify students to become officers in the field artillery in times of emergency. Students are commissioned second lieutenants in the field artillery of the Officers Reserve Corps after they have completed the course. Major James A. Gillespie is head of the Military Science and Tactics Department. He is well liked by the students and he has worked untiringly to help the University R. 0. T. C. unit maintain its high rating. The other officers are: Captain Russell C. Snyder, Freshman Instructor and in charge of the pistol team competition; Captain Clarence F. Murray, Sophomore Instructor and in charge of the polo team; Captain M. L. Craig, Junior Instructor; and Captain Paul C. Boylan, Senior Instructor. Gillespie, Snyder, Craig, Murray, Boylan, Hutton.
