Show WOMEN'S DEBATE Under the skillful coaching of La Verne Bane the women's debate squad participated in some excellent work this year. Early in October tryouts for the squad were conducted. The finalists included Virginia Nichols, Mary Barnes, Jane Van Ness, Jane Rice, Zella Skidmore, Dorothy Abbott, Virginia Cahoon, and Charlotte McGrath. Three questions were chosen for debate this year, "Resolved: that the Democratic party should be returned to power in 1932," "Resolved: that the present economic crisis represents a major indictment of the capitalistic system," and "Resolved: that Congress should enact legislation providing for the centralized control of industry, constitutionally waived." Virginia Cahoon and Charlotte McGrath participated in a non-decision encounter with representatives of Denver University. Debating the University of Southern California at Los Angeles, Virginia Nichols and Jane Van Ness competently represented the school. Culminating the activities of the year was the series of debates at Provo from which Utah forensic artists emerged in a tie with Brigham Young University for the state championship.
