Show ALL-HAIL Greetings, and may this year yield as great a measure of happiness and profit to as last year did. The University has been successful in multiplying student advantages in the last few years. And last year was probably the peak year, as 1 put it to Modest1 Coppock just a few days ago. "Earl," I said. Just like that, easy-like and no fuss, "Earl, this has been the biggest year in the history of Utah." "Georgie," he said-and was I proud! Georgie! People have got the wrong notion about Coppock- Earl, that is. "Georgie, I know it," he said and mussed my hair. But does that make us forget good old Kingsbury Hall- Kingsbury, that is? No! Just easy-like and friendly as anything we step over into Kingsb'y-Kingsbury, that is. Hall and hear men like Sherwood Anderson and see plays like Earl Carrol's Van-2 . . . Sherwood Sherson3 -Sherwood Anderson, that is. Powerful man, Anderson. Powerful. Wide knowledge! Capable! Few men of his caliber-too bad he didn't get a chance to see Saltair rebuilt. Pretty hard luck, for a man of Anderson's caliber. Too bad. Well, like I said before, this handbook contains numerous suggestions whose purposes is to stimulate those mental exiginicies that must be called into play of the University of Utah spirit, if it is to rise up sort of dynamoatic in the school life, if you get what I mean. What I means is this, sort of: Now, if it is like this (like I said) that we must aid the student in his yearnings for this new America a special effort has been made dergatory or not, to look at the organized groups sort of logically, if you get what I mean.5 But you know, Herman, their national ain't as good as the Pi Phi's, even if they was on the campus first. This may or may not be in-w i t h downright facing a faux pas or being sorry for something that didn't wash so well-this is definitely not the University of Utah spirit.6 What I mean is this, like I said before, this handbook is to aid the student in a spirit of cooperation with the others in service, and whenever possible therefore, in important situations have been made so prominent as to cast reflection on the president with the confident belief that in no other way can an appeal so effectively be made to sympathetic heart, the heart tried and true, as it were, and the earnest good will of the student, concerning which are presented questions, suggestions, problems, or projects that will help the student to interpret the facts of closely reviewing plans of directed study by means of which he will be able to reorganize his knowledge with the freshness and vigor of a new approach. You can build a Utah spirit that will be the pride of everyone who represents Utah, whether it be in contest, art, or in the community, from now on, I sincerely hope, God helping me.5 1. Footnote-Probably true; for not only is it excellent for poise and grace, but it is splendid for the health, generally speaking. 2. Footnote-Morse seized it feverishly. 3. Editor's note-It is difficult to say just when these men became intimates. 4. Ibid: An ordinary double No. 12 smooth-bore, the first breech-loader I ever had. 5. Ibid: This was murmurred so softly that I may have been mistaken. 6. Footnote: Probably "What is it, sweet Valeria?" Page Three Hundred Thirty-eight |
