Show Bennion, Guard After the Crimson had confounded G. Ott Romney's Cougars at Provo, it looked as if Utah would sweep clean the series as it had done in 1931; but, bracing, the Cougars took care that such should not be the case. Result: First game: Utah, 35, Brigham Young, 32; Second Game: Brigham Young, 43, Utah U, 34. Stan Smith shared scoring honors with Romney, B. Y. U. captain, with 16 markers. Guarding in this game was of the highest order, Bennion and Lund of Utah, and Le Seur and Johnson of Young, sparkling. Good guarding in the second game turned into savage fouling, 25 miscues being called on the Utes and 15 on the Cat amounts. Though Utah claimed an 18-18 deadlock with B. Y. U. at the half, things went awry under the incessant pegging of Romney and Nelson. Watts scored 9 points. The playoff for the western division flag, staged March 1 in the South High gym, Salt Lake, was a tense affair from start to finish, both teams cringing under the load at stake. Young forged into an early lead, but was soon overtaken, only to surge ahead once more. Banking on a 21-19 lead at the half, the Provoans were never headed, winning 35-33. Romney, with a pyrotechnical display such as has seldom been put on for hoop lovers, was the leading light of the game. Cox, Ute star, sat on the bench with the "flu." Had he been in there, we might have had another story to record here. Watts, pinch hitting for him, played a bang-up ball game. Page Two Hundred Thirteen |
