Pendant qu'on édifioit ce monument de la pieté du Duc 8c de fon Epoufe, le Duc fut attaqué d'une maladie dont les Médecins ne purent connoître r\y la nature ny la caufe. La maladie commença par un grand dcgoût qui fut fuivi d'une fièvre lente fans de grandes douleurs, mais avec beaucoup de langueur; ce qui le fit devenir fi pale & fi maigre, qu'on ne pouvoit le regarder fans compalfion. Le fîecle dont nous parlonsa ctoit celuy de la fîmplicité; & comme les Médecins ne purent rien connoître à cette maladie 3 on /alla imaginer qu'il Falloir en attribuer la caufe à quelque Sorcier ou Magicien gagné par quelque ennemi du Prince.. Il ie trouva desCourrifans qui dirent, qu'il falloit chercher un autre Sorcier qui pût défaire le charme du premier, & rétablir le tempérament du Duc ; Mais , dit M»l'Abbé Barrin, comme ils en firent la pru:option au J)uc en prefeme de notre Sainte, la Ducheffe détourna un R mauvais deflein , & fon époux rempli de tous les fentimens d'un vray Chrétien , mourut entre fes bras en 1457. au mois cTQ&obre après fept ans de règne. Notre Auteur dit icy, que Ci Fon en veut croire les Hifloriens, cette mort fut annoncée par une Croix brillante qui parut fur la Ville : il ne tient pas à luy qu'on ne- croye la chofe véritable; car il ajoute, que ce fait a été dépo-fe^ par plufteurs peribnnes dignes de foy ' c'eiï le tour (jue prennent h plupart de |
