Mais il faut fe reflbuvenir que la critique regarde uniquement la dureté des contours, & la manière féche qui règne dans tout le tableau , & n'attaque point l'ouvrage en gênerai j l'un des plus beaux qui foit fortï des pains de Raphaël. Et c'efl peut-être ce qui fait dire au Comte Malva/îe , qu'il préfere-roic à l'original même u h copie que le Gui-1 de en a faite, parce que le Guide qui pei-gnoit moëleufement , & qui d'ailleurs étoit un excellent Peintre, a pu corriger les défauts du tableau fans en altérer les beautez. Il y a lieu de s'étonner que dans le deflein de relever le prix de ce tableau , l'Auteur n'ait pas rapporté une hiftoire que l'on trouve dans Vafari, & que nous redonnerons icy en peu de mots. François Francia, l'un des plus habiles Peintres de fon temps, eut une extrême paffion de connoître Raphaël, &de voir fes ouvrages dont la réputation étoit & grande. Dans cette vue, il lui fit parler par ces amis communs, & lui écrivit même pour lui demander fon amitié. Raphaël répondit avec la politeffë qui lui étoit naturelle. Il lui manda qu'il venoit d'achever le tableau de fainte Cécile pour une Eglife de Bologne ; qu'il prenoit la liberté de le lui adreffer, & de lui demander fes foins pour le faire mettre en place , après en avoir corrige les dé-ftuts. Francia reçut cette cornmiiTion, comme «ne marque precieufe d'une amitié §c d'un© |
