Differs conspicuously from the female of S. pallidipes (Jerd.), the general colour of the head and upper parts being darker and more uniform, the upper tail-coverts and outer webs of the tail-feathers being olive-brown tinged with rufous instead of chestnut; but the most conspicuous difference is to be found in the colour of the throat, fore-neck, and chest, which are pale rust-colour instead of deep orange-rust.
