The tibio-tarsal articulation reaches the eye. Skin smooth, faintly areolate on the belly. Pale brownish above, with a large blackish-brown marking with indentations extending from between the eyes to the sacral region; sides of head and body and upper surface of legs blackish brown ; a whitish spot on the leg above the tibio-tarsal articulation ; upper surface of thigh whitish, with a narrow dark brown streak ; lower parts white. In addition to the characters given by Werner from Camaroons specimens, this well-marked species is easily distinguished from H. rufus by the more dorsal position of the tympanum. The only specimen obtained by Mr. Bates on the Benito Biver is uniform purplish above. DENDROBATID^E. CARDIOGLOSSA, g. n. Pupil horizontal. Tongue large, cordiform, deeply notched behind. Tympanum distinct. Fingers and toes free, the tips dilated into regular disks. Outer metatarsals united.
