Show 4298 Loper- D 2319 At Soda Basin there is a rapid there you have to be very careful about. Then at Gypsum creek is a big rapid; there is nothing to that but just get right out and nose your boat over the rapid. Q This first rapid, I understand you ran that? A The Soda Basin rapid? Q Yes. A No, we lined over that, and we nosed over Gypsum creek rapid, because whenever you have provisions freighted from Dolores of Thompson to Bluff and then boat them from Bluff down to Soda Basin, you are not in a position to lose them, so we had to use caution and not lose anything. Q What is the difference between lining a boat and nosing a boat? A Nosing a boat, you get out and get hold of the nose of it; don't have any line. In lining a boat, you are trying to walk along the shore and have your boat out in the river. That is something I never did very much, was lining boats. Q I don't believe I understand just how you nosed a boat through a place where you have lots of water. A There wasn't lots of water, because there is very little water; the rapid at Soda Basin is a bad rapid in certain stages of water -- at that certain stage of water when you get so low you haven't got the water you can't boat on rock. |
