Show 4278 Daily- D 2299 A We started at Greenriver, unloaded our boats from the flat cars there, took them down, had them painted; they were launched with proper ceremony at Greenriver; we took them from there about three- thirty in the afternoon; we made our first camp about six- thirty that night; we had a slight rain that night. Q Where did you make your camp? A Made our camp on sandbars on the right- hand side of the river. Q About how many miles from Greenriver? A About eight or ten miles, I think. Q Do you recall a creek in there know as the San Rafael? A Yes sir. Q Did you boats have any difficulties of any kind between Greenriver and the mouth of the San Rafael? A We were continually grounding on sandbars, and es-pecially the mud flats around the San Rafael; the water was very, very low; we all got stuck in the mud when we tried to get out of the boats; we had to life the boats off the sand-bars continually; always getting wet. Q Now, from the San Rafael down to the junction of the Colorado river, just tell me the difficulties your party had in there, if any. A The sandbars weren't so many, but water was very shallow; we hit a good many riffles where the boats grounded on |
