A Well, our largest rapids came just after we left-- after we got by the riffles, after you leave the junction you go by a certain amount of riffles; then we come into Cataract canyon. Q Tell me about going through Cataract canyon. A Cataract canyon is very tough going for boats; the rocks are very numerous there, very large, and it is very hard to get through. The water is so shallow that we were in doubt several times whether we would get the boats through there without portaging them around. Q Do you recall whether or not you did portage some of the rapids? A Yes, we did. Q Did you lose any boats there? A No sir; we had several boats that had holes knocked in them from the rocks, but we were able to repair the boats and |
