Show 4157 McDonald- D 2177 when they get under and you hold them still, if you let them go they would be like a ship, come up again. Them we lost the third boat; Mr. Reynolds was in the third boat, around one of the rapids; he had hold of the line; they was lining that, and that boat, when we lost it and it went down, he went down with the boat, but he held to the line, and we pulled him ashore on that line, and the wreck of the boat. That was the third boat in Cataract canyon. Then we concluded we wouldn't risk it; we got driftwood and laid it down on the rocks, and skidded them along on the keel, in place of lining them through, to save them, and then at the lower edge we put them in and run. Q For what distance did you skid these boats along? A Sometimes be one hundred yards, sometimes less, across the rapids, sometimes one side of the river, sometimes the other. Q As I understand it, you would skid them along, then when you would come to a stretch between the rapids you would put them back in the water again? A Yes. Q Then come to another rapid place and take them out and skid them again? A At the upper edge of the rapid. |
