Show 4307 Loper- D 2328 To explain to you the differences in the canyon, it is the same canyon, but a different canyon in this, from Grand gulch up it is in the lime, but at Grand gulch the line of the lime goes under and the big Navajo sandstone cliffs comes in to form the canyon walls. In the upper canyon, or limestone country, we have talus slopes; when the big sandstone cliffs come in, we will have that we call wall rocks; the river will make a bend; when it gets on the outside bend it will cut clear into the wall rock; if you are walking, that will shut you off on that side; when it makes another bend, it will shut you off on this side. The river was wider, -- while it was still boxed in the canyon, the river was wider, therefore shallower; and there was two or three instances where we would be going along, and all at once our boat would catch on the sand and maybe tip up sideways; throwed Mr. Allen and Mr. Trimble and the cook out once, when the boat tipped up on the sand. We would get out, get to nosing around, find the channel; maybe by walking through we could get through. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q Do I understand you to say where the sandstone canyon begins through there there are no shores of the river you can walk on? A There will be shores on one side, but not on both |
