Show 4141 McDonald- D 2161 prospecting down in southern Utah? A Oh, my, yes. Q When did you start that, and what parts of Utah were you in? A I started that on the Grand, first. Q Whereabouts on the Grand? A Oh, we built a boat at Grand Junction, Colorado, in Cramer's wagon yard, put it on to a rack and hauled it down to the river; it was in March; the ice was running; the river was breaking up, but the ice was running; they kept telling us we would drown if we run down; me and my partner put it in-- THE SPECIAL MASTER: Strike that out. A We put it in and run down the river through the ice; come to a wide place down about twelve or fourteen miles down below where the river widened out; it was still frozen over there; I stepped out on to the ice -- this was a flat bottom skiff -- felt of the ice to see if it would hold the boat, and then pulled the boat up on top of the ice and we skidded the boat over the ice like a sled to the water where it was open, give it a shove, and jumped in, before it got into the much ice. We went down through that, through the first granite canyon down to what is know as the Bar X bottom today -- it was no Bar X bottom them. We stopped there, built a cabin, put in a little dam |
