Show 4286 Loper- D 2307 the Green, Colorado and San Juan? A Yes sir. Q When did you first enter that country? A In the fall of 1893, just a short time in 1893. Q From what point did you come in, and how did you come in? A I was employed in 1893 when the panic came, in Rico, Colorado; the panic closed the mines there, that caused me to hunt new fields, and I turned from silver to gold; that is how I came to go to the San Juan river, in search of gold. The first, I think it was about two months in the fall of 1893 I put in on the upper San Juan, about twenty- five or thirty miles above Bluff, tested out the machine on the bars along there. When the cold weather came I went back to Montezuma valley for the balance of the winter. Q Just what do you refer to as the Montezuma valley? A That is where Cortez, Colorado, is; it wasn't in the town, but in the valley. Q What other sections of the San Juan river have you be on? A That little incident in the fall of 1893 was all on the upper part of the San Juan, I know. The rest is from Bluff to its junction with the Colorado. Q When did you enter that section? |
