Q How was all of the machinery, the pumps and other equipment which was used in connection with that dredge and ice plant, brought in? A They were brought in with teams, overland, brought down to this bar; we were working nearly a mile above where we hauled the supplies down; we put up a little telephone line, independent line, between the two bars where we were working, where we were camped, and where the teams came in. A team would come in loaded, and they would phone up, and we would take the scow -- we built a flat bottom boat, light draft, and we would take the scow and go down and load the stuff on and pull it up. We had a heavy telegraph wire, and we had that anchored up the river, and a windlass on the scow; they would let that wind off and les the scow go down the river to the bar, then the men on each side would windlass that up to the camp and |
