Show 4148 McDonald- D 2168 out in one of the bars in the center of the river, sandbars in the center; the water split both ways; we took some of the boats we brought down and made a sluice box, and we dug a channel through the sandbar, which formed just there was a rapid there, just above North canyon, between that and the mouth of the Dirty Devil; we dug through the bar, and put the sluice box in, and commenced shoveling the dirt in from both sides; the water running through washed it down, a riffle block catching the gold. Q Did you bring any quicksilver with you? A Oh, always; you couldn't do anything without it; where the gold is shot gold, lots of times you can pan it down as close as you can, and then blow the common sand put of it, and clean it that way, but you can't do the fine gold that way, because it has too much magnetic iron, black sand in it, lots of platinum in it there. Q On that trip did you get out anywheres near the San Juan river? A Not that first trip, no. Q While you were in there did you experiment any with this boat in the cataracts? A Yes. Q Just tell me about that. A We prospected along up, working along up the canyon, came up to the foot of the rapids, we crossed the Dirty Devil |
