Fulvous, the breast and the legs black ; thorax very closely and distinctly punctured; elytra dark bluish, closely and finely punctured. Length 5 millim. Head impunctate, fulvous, the frontal tubercles very strongly raised ; antennas short and robust, flavous, the joints nearly monili-form, the third and fourth joints more elongate : thorax one-half broader than long, the sides rounded, the angles acute, the surface very closely and distinctly punctured, fulvous ; scutellum fulvous ; elytra dark blue, closely aud strongly punctured, their epipleuras broad and continued to the apex ; beloAv piceous or black, the abdomen flavous ; all the tibias mucronate, the tarsi short, the anterior coxal cavities closed. Hab. Moliro, Congo (Duvivier). Belgian Mus. collect, and my own. This species agrees in every respect with the type of the genus, E. protect Chap, from Abyssinia, and it is possible that it only represents another variety of this variable species ; but as I have two specimens before m e perfectly identical, and as the elytra in E. protect show no trace of blue, I must look upon the present insect as distinct. MEGALOGNATHA IMMACULATA, sp. n. Elongate, parallel, testaceous; head and thorax impunctate; elytra obscure fulvous, extremely finely and sparingly punctured. Length 7 millim. Head broad, impunctate; frontal tubercles strongly raised, transverse ; clypeus equally strongly raised, in shape of a triangular ridge; palpi robust; antennas rather stout, flavous (tbe last three joints wanting), basal joint elongate, slightly curved, the third and the folloAving joints nearly equal in length ; thorax much broader than long, the sides slightly constricted at the base, nearly straight, the anterior angles thickened, the surface impunctate. obsoletely transversely sulcate ; scutellum triangular; elytra much wider at the base than the thorax and of darker fulvous colour, the shoulders rather prominent and bounded Avithin by a longitudinal depression, the disc extremely finely and sparingly punctured ; underside and legs testaceous, finely pubescent, tbe first tarsal joint as long as the following joints together, claws appendiculate. Hab. Estcourt, Natal (G. Marshall). Allied in coloration to M. ventricosa Baly, but the thorax impunctate and differently sculptured, the general shape more parallel, and the colour of the antennas and legs different. The tAvo specimens obtained are probably females ; the sulcation of the thorax resembles more semi-separate foveas than a continued groovre, but is more distinct in one of the specimens than in the other. |
