Show In 1989 she left the Survey and ran for the United states Congress from the 2nd District, winning the Republ ican primary against former Congressman Dan Marriott (reportedly the first election women voted decisively for a woman 58%) and then lost the general election to the incumbent Congressman, Wayne Owens. .. She continues her geological career as President and Geologist of Atwood & Mabey, Inc., whose mot to is "geology serving society". She also married her partner, Don Mabey, and they have 5 grandchildren. Atwood, has been awarded many honors for her work in Social Services and Health. She was chosen Legislator of the Year in 1977 by the Utah Association of Social Workers, John F. Kennedy fellow, Harvard University, 1978; Jim Bridger Award for conservation, Utah State University 1978; and the John Wesley Powell Award for service Rep. to geology, US Geological Survey, life is full of service.
