Show ELIZABETH MILLER BODELL Appointed 1941 to SKANCHY 1943 Elizabeth Miller was born March 28, 1903, to George J. and Fannie J.C. Miller at Herriman, Utah. She was the fifth child of ten. Four brothers and five sisters. She attended Jordan District Schools and worked for her father on the farm. She did not like to milk cows, although she says she was pretty good at helping haul hay. She loved to play the piano and played the piano in a dance band when she was fourteen. She married Milton Bodell in 1922, and they had four children. Elwood M., who died at age six, Arden J., Dixie B. Morris, and Georgia B. Peterson, who followed her in her legislative footsteps in 1969. In 1940, her husband was elected as a Democrat to the Utah House of Representatives, serving the south end of Salt Lake County. He only served part of his term, but found it necessary to resign because of illness Elizabeth She took and in 1941. appointed by Governor Hebert B. Maw to replace him. her husband's committee assignments and worked for in the State Industrial School, and against legalizing in the state. She served in three special sessions. was over improvements racing horse death Following her term in the legislature, she continued working in state government as an employee of the Tax Commission and the Finance Department until 1959. In 1948 Midvale, she ma r r i ed Judge W. Lee Skanchy, Utah until his death in 1977. and they lived in Skanchy has been active in political, community and church activities. Her first husband was a Bishop in the LDS church, and she held various church posiitons also. Ward Organist for 21 years, member of the Utah and National OWLs, member of the University of utah Mothers Club, board member of the State Historical Society and of Women. An avid reader, she has a member of the Salt Lake Council composed several poems and short stories for her own and family's enjoyment. She loves beautiful flowers, and her home in Midvale was chosen to receive Midvale City's beautification award. Rep. Elizabeth has n{ne grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. She has one living sister who lives in Provo, Utah. Her interests have centered on her family, her church, and her community. And she has helped make each area better because of her involvement. 107 |
