Show MINNIE V. HARRIS Elected When 1933 to HEADMAN 1935 she Harris was asked what was her favori te hobby, "Politics." It was a hobby she enjoyed all her life. Minnie answered, Minnie was born at Erie, Colorado on February 14th to Enoch and Mary Rushton Vaughn. She received her education in the elementary and high schools of Como, Colorado. Her early ambition was to be a nurse but on February 4, 1914, she married John William Harris of Missouri and they moved to Sal t Lake . on, she engaged in political and lodge work and cared for her home. She was a member of the Women's Democratic Club and for many years was chair of the Salt Lake City Second Municipal Ward. She was active in the Church, was a member of Naomi From 1914 Episcopalian Rebekah Lodge No.1 and the Ladies Patriarch Militants. In 1932 her husband died and in the same year she ran for and was elected to the House of Representatives for the 1933 session. Here she was chair of the Labor, State Prison, state Training School, Public Health and Elections Committees. Her contact with the State Prison through the legislature sparked her interest in police work and particularly in relation to women convicts. She applied for and was hired as a poVicewoman. She worked out of the sheriff's office with the courts and the judges in the handling of women prisoners. She was short, rather stocky and very firm with the women. But she was fair and they liked her. She took the women from the jail for their court appearances and when a decision was handed down, if they were sentenced to the state prison, she accompanied them there long with the officers. she to the State Mental Hospi tal, the event they were sent secured the letters of transmittal and accompanied them, too. They respected her authority and she had no trouble with her charges. In E. Headman's wife had died in 1935. In 1936 he was acting as juror when he saw and became acquainted with Minnie. She was a highly intelligent woman and he was pleased with her conduct and handling of the women. The acquaintance blossomed and the two were otto a married. After her marriaage she continued her work for several retiring to private life. 94 years before |
