Show BETH Elected JARMAN 1975-1977 Jarman was born April 6, 1941 to Wayne and Jean Smith in Salt Lake City. She was born on a farm, the second of three daughters who had to learn to drive the tractor, haul hay and pick fruit. She was lucky tho, as she had her own horse, and loved to swim in the irrigation reservoir. Rep. she dreamed of being a professional baseball player and made with the utah but her mother semi-pro debut Shamrocks, persuaded her that "good girls" didn't play professional baseful. She soon channel ed her competi ti ve dri ve into school acti vi ties and At 13, her scholastic endeavors. love of history led her to major in American history and take her master's degree in that subject. She attended the University of Utah and graduated cum laude. On March 19, 1962 while in her junior ,year at the University she married Michael C. Jarman. They had two A Alex and Michelle. She received her PH.D. in June 1977. Doctoral dissertation was "Political Activism of Utah's Educators and its Relationaship to Educational Funding and Quality of Education". children, Her She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, of outstanding women educators; Phi Alpha Theta. honorary society Kappa Phi, and an a international member of Phi Professionally, Beth is dedicated to excellence in education. She has been very active in designing innovative curriculum for high school students. She was a member of the National and Utah Council for Social Studies which foster innovation in social studies and excellence in the classroom. 1972-73 she encourages During introduced a community based American Goverment curriculum which involved students in and personally governmental political as interns for legislators; and witnessing processes; campaigns, the court system at work. Beth and another faculty member designed a three hour daily course entitled American Studies, to remotivate seniors and prepare them for college.
