Show REVA BECK BOSONE Elected Congresswoman 1948 to 1952 Elected Utah Beck Reva Bosone was Utah's Representative first 1933 Congresswomen. to 1937 She was utah's judge and has been accorded many firsts in the accomplishments of women. She was self-confident, digni tied and serene; has given judgment in a city court, taught parliamentary procedure to classes and entertained small groups with songs and readings. first woman her ancestors helped to establish, plenty. Her father was Christian M. Beck, her Chipman Beck who was a descendant of the Mayflower pioneers and of the 1847 Utah pioneers. Her mother was kind, loving but firm and supportive of her children in their undertakings. She encouraged Reva through high school, saw her off to Westminster College and provided money for her to go to the University of California. Born in Reva grew American Fork, which in comfort and mother was Zilpha up The townspeople too encouraged Reva. They selected her as queen and as Goddess of Liberty. They applauded when she won oratory and reading contests and helped with her debates for American Fork High School. She designed floats, directed the school play and ran for president of the student body. A girl for student body president? It was unheard of! A compromise was reached and she accepted the vice She presidency. just as acive at Westminster. When she applied for entrance University of California, American Fork and Westminster well have been a foreign tongue, but through her own might ini tiati ve she was admi t ted. Upon recei ving her B. A. from the she was offered at University of California, teaching jobs Westminster and at American Fork High School. Then an opportunity English at the University of Utah which she took. She also studied law. Here she met and married Joseph P. Bosone, a few months before she received her law The degree. marriage was incompatible, and lasted but a year. To the couple, however, a daughter Zilpha was born. Soon after the birth, Reva practiced law in Helper and after two years was elected to the legislature from Carbon County. Reva came 16 to teach |
