Show acquisitions 2012 FoCA Acquisition Dinner On November 2, 2012, the Friends of Contemporary Art continued their annual tradition of acquiring a new artwork for the UMFA's permanent collection of modern and contemporary art. Along with voting for the selected artworks, guests enjoyed a cocktail reception, a chic sit-down dinner, and live jazz music. The night's guest of honor was artist Jann Haworth, whose soft sculpture, The White Charm Bracelet (2004), was chosen as the 20 I I art acquisition. This year's winning piece is a sculpture titled "*U-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-" (20 I I) by artist Jedediah Caesar. Los Angeles-based artist Jedediah Caesar amasses discarded man-made materials and natural objects- collected from road trips, his studio, or walks around his neighborhood-then sets them in resin and slices the hardened block to reveal the embedded components, as seen in"* J_J_[_[_[_[_J_J_[_[_". Like a reverse archaeologist, Caesar recontextualizes found objects by fusing them together. Caesar continues the land art strategies of bringing the outside in and blurring boundaries of place by connecting seemingly unrelated sites. His work will be enjoyed by Utah's residents and visitors for generations to come. The annual dinner and art acquisition are made possible through individual contributions to the FoCA program.
