Show on view Vanishing Point Janet Biggs, production stills from Vanishing Point, 2009, single-channel video with sound. Courtesy of the artist, Winkleman Gallery, NYC, and Conner Contemporary Art,Washington, D.C. The UMFA is pleased to announce a new addition to the second floor gallery: Vanishing Point. On view throughout the summer, this video was created by video and installation artist Janet Biggs and is presented in conjunction with the Speed: The Art of the Performance Automobile exhibition. Vanishing Point brings together footage of the Harlem Addicts Rehabilitation Center Choir and motorcycle racer Leslie Porterfield, "The Fastest Woman in the World on a Motorcycle" according to the Guinness Book ofWorld Records. Between shots of the choir performing a song written for the film, Biggs depicts Porterfield's successful attempt to break the Bonneville Salt Flat land speed record in 2008, including her winning speed of 234 mph. Biggs constructs a powerful narrative meant to capture people attempting to transcend their limits. |
