Williams College Museum of Art. Gift of Cole Porter. Dale Nichols is recognized as a major American Regionalist alongside artists Grant Wood.Thomas Hart Benton, and John Steuart Curry. The work of these four men, created in the Midwest during the Great Depression, defined a period when artists began to turn toward the local landscape and known narratives in hopes of creating a uniquely American art The UMFA is delighted to present Dole Nichols: Transcending Regionalism, an exhibition spanning much of the artist's long career. Nichols' early paintings focused on the difficult relationship between Midwest farmers and their land. His stylized landscapes and red barns, representing both shelter and sustenance, honored the agrarian ideal and reflected images of hope for a struggling nation. By the 1940s, Nichols indulged his wanderlust by traveling to Alaska and spending extended periods of time in Guatemala and Mexico creating artwork. Dole Nichols: Transcending Regionalism will be on view in the UMFA's Great Hall from September 28, 2012-March 18, 2013. |
