Show George R. Hill-Dean MINESAND MINERALS 'A really good future' There are many reasons why Dean George R. Hill can say, "People who are sincere about doing a good job in the field of mines and mineral engineering have a really good future." This year, the College of Mines and Minerals received a special grant of $1 million for research from a joint project of the U.S Office of Coal Research and the University of Utah. The purpose of the project is to find an efficient method for converting Utah coal into gasoline and natural gas products. The college also gained two new faculty members who brought sizable a-mounts of money with them in order to initiate two important projects; one in seismic studies and one in energy conversion. In addition, a new $3.17 million Mineral Sciences Building under constuction is schedueled for completion by January of 1971. With assets like these, opportunities for students are great. In the area of student-faculty relations, the college is equally well-equipped and progressive. One professor stated, "We have close relationships in the College of Mines because the college is small. Classes are small and you can work closely with students in the class and lab." Students seem to be equally optimistic. "My teachers are personal, but they can't be too personal with the students or judgment and academic goals become lost. They are great professors and have the students' interests in mind." 364 |
