Show Above: Kathy Fox leads Ute cheers as Leslie Eddington, Above Right and Joanne Anderson, Above Far Right join in. Right: Ute Songleaders-Front: Leslie Eddington, Kathy Fox, Middle: Lyn Poulson, Judy Work, Judy Iwami, Shirley Stringham, Back: Karen Tall (Head Songleader), Joanne Anderson. 104 Keeping Red and White spirit alive in a huge, noisy, popcorn-munching and hot dog-chomping stadium crowd is no easy task, but Songleaders, Utahnas and Cheerleaders throw themselves into the task body and soul, mind and vocal cords. While Cheerleaders compose and shout cheers, Songleaders and Utahnas drum up crowd support. Their stamina is amazing-the end of a game usually finds one and all totally exhausted, but they fight apathy in the stands and support the teams through game after game, even though there is little reward in doing so. The Utahnas in particular put in many extra hours on their drill routines for which they receive no compensation and very little thanks. Why do they do it? "It feels good to bring up student spirit even a little-the 'U' needs it." |
