Show ASUU V.P. position initiated Where is the actual power in ASUU? The decision making process in Utah student government is not contingent on a single person-there is no unity of function or style-but upon several dominant factions. These portions are usually centered upon some person or idea rather than on specific goals, and much of what the ASUU does is based on political infighting. Strong leadership at the head of ASUU is a vital factor in determining whether or not the government for a given year accomplishes anything or is reduced to petty squabbling and jurisdictional disputes. Frank Overfelt, ASUU President, was elected by a vote of the students and supervises the various functions of the Student Government. As a voting member of the Union and Ap- 144 portionment Boards, he can wield a considerable political clout. ASUU Vice President, Randy Dryer, is probably one of the busiest members. He acts as the ASUU personnel manager, office manager, supply coordinator, and political catch-all as well as sitting as Exec. Council Vice-Chairman and standing in for the President in case of his absence. Dryer is assigned the supervision of various projects and committees, many political hot potatoes or contemporary issues. His post, while mainly an administrative job, is vital in protecting the political stance of the administration in power. |
