Show a. O Tosca's first time The University of Utah performs one popular opera repertoire each year. The 1969-70 production was La Tosca on Feb. 11, 13, and 14 in Kings-bury Hall. Under the direction of Ar-dean Watts and student assistant Loa B. Lund, stage director Mr. Harrower and assistant music director Shann Jacobsen, La Tosca was performed for the first time on this University campus. A current availability of singers, set and costumes made it possible. All opera workshop students participated so that 40 University students gained opera experience. Four of the minor leads were students, and the major leads were Tosca, played by Ariel Bybee, Scarpio by Don Watts, and Cavaradossi by Glade Peterson, all formerly with the University. Tosca played to the largest total audience for an opera that Kingsbury Hall has had. It was especially notable for the appearance of leading tenor Glade Peterson of the Zurich Opera Company. The Utah Symphony performed the instrumental score with Maestro Maurice Abravanel conducting the acclaimed group. 78 |
