Show other campus, except BYU--and thus we have a crop of Rebels which might otherwise not exist, and an underground that is divided between rebel and radical. Often, the Huddle Bum set is strictly Utah. Their whole rebellion scene is Utah. Their every attitude shapes in opposition to what Utah is. These people are dropouts from an intolerable society, but cannot be categorized as genuine radi-cals-they would be still straight if born elsewhere-because they don't look beyond rebellion to other, larger issues. SCENERY GREENERY AUTONOMY ECONOMY. Daily the University grows. More people crowd onto the sidewalks each year, each individual in the mass intent on pulling it through for four or possibly six years. Masses for mass education, less contact with lecturers, watered down content, specialization, increased tuition, costlier books and other sordid inconveniences, yes; but there is another important consideration: functional autonomy in academic departments. Even a highly capable administration cannot be expected to deal directly with the educational affairs of twenty-thousand plus students. Academic divisions are natural intermediaries in bulk administration. As the size of each division grows, so does its measure of administrative power. President Fletcher believes in delegating authority to academic heads in order to make his administration more effective, and this, in turn, encourages independence on a departmental level. Students get into the act as faculty advisory boards elect student members and ASUU pushes for a departmental Senate. Autonomy is good for some, bad for others. When Letters and Sciences are joined, both pull an adequate if not bountiful budget; but when they are separated, Letters may have a much harder time. The generation of a large, independent departmental structure will also deal the already poor University spirit yet another blow. If one were to take the bleak view, he could easily see the day when thousands of students would come to campus, spend the day in one building, then go home; 23 |
