Show When it was learned that Hubert Humphrey was to be the Hinckley Institute's Politician in Residence this year, several things happened. First, most Political Science Students sharpened pencils, wits and daggers; second, the SDS had a party; third, the media panicked. Media recovered in time to provide an adequate coverage of Mr. Humphrey's visit. A busy schedule characterized the former Vice-President's visit. He gave two lectures, talked at two informal gatherings, held a press conference, and talked with the Utah Young Democrats. Mr. Humphrey's main theme for the entire day was, Reform or Perish. He emphasized the fact that reform does not entail destruction, but improvement and adaptation. He added that we should profit from the mistakes of the past. Mr. Humphrey also told a group of aspiring politicians that nobody was going to serve political power "on a platter; no one likes to share power." One has to get into the arena and get roughed up. Meanwhile, the SDS pickets paced about outside the building. 45 |
