Pat Knibbe BASEBALL Hits weren't there when needed Although Utah outhit opponents during the '69 season, they couldn't get the crucial hit when they needed it. The problem was worked out, however, and the Utes went on to post three straight shut-outs against the Wyoming Cowboys (4-0, 15-0, 1-0) and seemed to be back in the race for the Northern Division title in the WAC. In the mid-season series with Wyoming, the Utes posted a total of 26 hits while the great pitching of Mark DiGiosio and Dick Hardy held the Cowboys to three connections. Utah tied with BYU for division leadership with a league mark of 4-2. Misfortune arrived in the form of a Cougar. BYU was able to whip the Ute nine in three games 7-2, 12-8, 7-2, and the Redskins went on to lose yet three more to Wyoming, 7-2, 8-3, 7-2. The losses put Utah out of the running for the Northern Division WAC title and gave the Utes a 20-21 won-loss record. George Theodore and Tom Kilgore were both signed by the New York Mets at the end of the season. |
