Show Registration or orientation? One major problem that the orientation committee and student staff had to wrestle with was balance between the pure academic registration and the orientation of the new students to the university environment. The student staff discovered that although a university orientation was most desirable, the registration was uppermost in the minds of most freshmen. Many wanted to get in and get out as quick as possible. However, many others enjoyed the chance to get to know the university and each other better. The full program had the students on campus for thirty-six hours, in which they were briefed as to registration procedures and the new General Education program, sent running off to academic advisors, came back to student leaders who tried to "un-confuse" them, ran through various information sessions (most Frosh took this opportunity to sack out, or take off somewhere else), and then evening entertainment programs both scheduled and unscheduled. Many Frosh capitalized on their first night away from Mom and Dad. 30 |
