Show DEANS OF STUDENTS Antenna for student opinion Virginia P. Frobes-Dean of Students Oakley J. Gordon -Dean of General Education The "Voice" so passionately demanded on other campuses has its roots in the open policies fostered by our Deans of Students, although their conception of the purpose behind this voice is somewhat different from the general student's. Dean of Students Virginia Frobes, for instance, believes effective communication is a device for making the University an environment where students can learn to behave in the community. She attributes our effective campus relations to a participating student body. Dean Frobes is active in counseling students as well as in setting down regulatory policy. Patton, Bennion, Grundfossen, and Kerr-three associates and one assistant Dean who serve as the antennae for student opinion in the administration, occupy an anala-mous position. How can you be a student and a fat cat sellout too? The ground is liable to shift suddenly. Until it does, however, the four perform a function no one else could. Oakley J.Gordon, Dean of General Education and Academic Counseling, is another person who helps students work out problems. Working out problems does not necessarily mean helping individuals. Dean Gordon is embroiled in the continuous battle of General Ed., where he is often under fire from every direction. A good ear for screams of rage from both students and faculty is no doubt valuable in keeping the General Ed. program up-to-date and reasonable. This year was the initiation of a completely new General Ed. program, which eliminated many of the specific educational requirements, such as Health, Physical Education and Speech. Area requirements were revamped, expanded and vitalized, insuring new students much better chance of escaping the old "trap" classes most upperclassmen had to sufferthrough. 308 1 |
