Show By any account, the Black minority on campus is the most exclusive, tightly knit of the four groups. The University has even seen fit to hire a special counselor-Detroit-born Harrison Whitney-for the Black students on campus. In an interview Mr. Whitney said, "Negro means nothing." He implied that it is better to be called Black. "Negro" suggests compromise, middle-of-the-road. "Black" implies solidarity, strength and self-awareness. Whites at the University wonder why the Black "We are becoming more aware of what we are and who we are."________________________ students seem to form cliques. "The Black students here form more than cliques. It is a result of an awareness. We are becoming more aware of what we are and who we are. Blacks never used to group together like this. We used to be absorbed in university life. We didn't begin the isolation, the whites did. They don't want to be bothered with us, and we don't want to be bothered by them. Integration doesn't work. You can't force yourself on someone. Civil Rights failed in this country. First we must have human rights, then we will automatically have Civil Rights." Mr. Whitney was emphatic.
