UNIVERSITY OF UTAH University of Utah Departmental Student Outcome Assessment Definitions CAPSTONE E X P E R I E N C E S might include undergraduate courses designed to be offered in the final semester of an undergraduate student's major, a course that ties together the key learning objectives that faculty expect the student to have learned during the major, interdisciplinary program, or interdepartmental major. E X I T SURVEYS might include standardized or specialized surveys (quantitative and/or qualitative in nature) designed to collect information from graduating student majors, including attitudes, opinions, satisfaction, and experiences, etc. ALUMNI SURVEYS might include standardized or specialized surveys (quantitative and/or qualitative in nature) designed to collect information from student alum's, including attitudes, opinions, satisfaction, and experiences, etc. EMPLOYER SURVEYS might include standardized or specialized surveys (quantitative and/or qualitative in nature) designed to collect information from employers regarding their satisfaction with recent graduates regarding academic and/or technical skills. LEARNING OUTCOMES might include statements of expected or desired student outcomes that should arise from a particular class, learning process, or experience. Intended learning outcomes are statements that predict what students are expected to gain as a result of learning. Outcomes can be specific (e.g., detailing specific and/or concrete competencies) or general (e.g., gaining a broad appreciation, awareness, comprehension or exposure to a particular type of content or concept). L I C E N S U R E / C O M P E T E N C Y EXAMS might include standardized or specialized examinations that students in a major or degree program are required to pass in order to graduate or to receive some type of documentation or licensure.
