Could it be a Commie plot? Hardly. It's Utechnic, the Engineering Magazine. Supported entirely by advertisement and reader subscription, the Utechnic puts out four issues per academic year serving as a communication link between students, faculty and alumni interested in engineering. The average number of issues distributed per publication is 1500 copies-an excellent circulation for a basically specialized magazine. Utechnic does have an advisor on the staff, but said person functions in an advice-giving capacity rather than a regulator of any sort. The staff is student and completely autonomous. As a publication, the Utechnic is primarily technical. Its articles run from analysis of artificial organs to poverty alleviation, and are obviously designed for the reader with a scientific or engineering background. This year, innovation in the layout area provided more space for graphics and illustration, helping the editors maintain their theme throughout the magazine. A sounding board for readers, "Pro & Con" was added this year, as well as a section on "What's New', at the University. Utechnic holds a seat on the executive committee of the national Engineering College Magazines Associated (one of four) and has landed the 1971 ECMA national convention for the University of Utah. If Utechnic is an example of what independent funding and editorial freedom can do, we highly recommend those twin goals to all campus publications. UTECHNIC Self-supported professional publication |
