Show in the White although it is known to exist at the mouth where it meets the Green River and in the Colorado portion of the White. The Virgin River is critical habitat for the R & E Woundfin - but citizens at St. George oppose adequate research to determine how to protect the species. I think we are heading for major disasters affecting major waterways in Utah! In this State with all this magnificent water -related resources, there is no one individual concentrating on water issues. The Sierra Club members each have developed an area of expertise - but not on water. CRCUP members are concentrating largely on cold water trout fishing and CUP developments. I see no way many of these sig-nificent water issues can be dealt with by the few environmentalists carrying on in the State now. While we are concentrating on the CUP, the BuRec merrily goes its way working with the State on other issues in other areas of the State. And I can't figures out how the President's Water Policy can deal with every kind of development proposed...except challenge by challenge. Brian Beard, is now Chairman, Sierra Club, Utah, Prof. Paul Salsbury having retired. Brian is^doing fine - but he is a student still and busy at that. f.o.Z. AfriJsv) The Wilderness'7 Society won't touch water issues since it hasn't time or manpower*. CRCUP is still in the infant stage of environmental action and is needed on the CUP issue. Utah Environmental Council folded. Brent, what is needed is a full time person who can head up a Utah Water Resource Council; someone who can attend daytime meetings of State Committees, and meet with Federal Agencies and represent a stance on water use and management. Assemble a water constituency. My husband came home Saturday. While he is much improved, there is still much physical therapy needed on his left hand and on his walking. We do not know, in fact what recovery will still take place. Brent, I think my husband would be willing to retire under the Church disability program as of Age 65 ( he is 62) but our income would only be between $5,000 - $6,000.. and we have no house. Can you suggest a means or a source I could apply for a grant to supplement this income which would enable us to retire to Utah and I would take on Utah's water resources? *Not quite true. A former Sierra Club Wilderness Rep. is now a river runner for a major Colorado River Trip Organization. He is alert to plans on the warm water rivers. |
